Parcel firm's expansion to create up to 300 jobs

Evri has announced a £29m investment programme to boost its network in Barnsley

Parcel delivery company Evri has announced plans to expand its hub in Barnsley and create up to 300 new roles at the site by the end of 2026.
Once complete, the £29m investment programme would allow the site to process about 5.5 million parcels each week, the firm said.
In preparation for this year's festive period, the site will also get new equipment, including a £4m small item sorter, to handle smaller parcels more effectively.
Matt Travis, president of Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce, said: "Evri's commitment to expanding its operations locally not only strengthens its own supply chain, but also creates a ripple effect that benefits our chamber members and the wider community."
Further upgrades at the site include the installation of a third sorting tier that will add an additional internal layer within the existing building.
Construction is expected to be complete in August 2026.
The Barnsley hub first opened in 2022 and the firm said more than 80% of the jobs created had been taken on by people living in the surrounding area.
'Historic year'
Mr Travis said: "This isn't just about logistics - it's about creating skilled and unskilled jobs, supporting a range of local businesses, and reinforcing Barnsley's position as a thriving hub for investment and enterprise.
"The chamber is pleased to see continued investment in our area, which clearly demonstrates that Barnsley (and Rotherham) is a place where business can grow and succeed."
Evri's capacity is also being increased at other centres such as Southampton and Bury St Edmunds, as well as a new depot opening in Belfast.
Martijn de Lange, chief executive of the Evri Group, said the firm was on track to deliver more than a billion parcels and a billion letters a year globally.
He said it had been a "historic year" for the company.
He added that the firm would "invest significantly in our operation to ensure we deliver the best possible service to our clients and customers, especially at the busiest time of the year for our industry".
