Group hails social benefits of Scottish dancing

A group of Scottish dancers in Staffordshire say their hobby is good for their physical, mental and social well-being.
But those behind the Stone Scottish Dancing Group said they keep their reeling and jigging going throughout the year, not just for the 25 January, Burns Night.
Phil Brassington, who had his first taste of this style of dancing at infant school in Scotland, has attended the group for 30 years.
“It’s very energetic, good for the mind, keeps you active,“ he said. “It’s a very sociable dance.”
The regular group activity also helps keep the village hall in Tittensor active.
Tracey Caulder is a trustee of the hall and joins the dancers every Wednesday with her brother.
“We want to see it used as much as possible because we are aware that other village halls are struggling,” she warned.
“We really value this big community space.”
The dancers perform in the sessions in groups - or sets - of usually three or four couples.
But recent joiner Linda Cross said she was pleased that they did not need people to attend as a couple.
“You don't want to be relying on somebody,” she said, “It’s such an enjoyable thing to do.”
Newcomers are welcome to sessions every Wednesday at 19:15, organisers said, with free taster sessions on 5 and 12 March.
“It’s a way of showing people what fun it is,” smiled Mr Brassington.
