A cat has been rescued after being found by refuse collectors in a bin in a box with bags of rubbish piled on top.

The RSPCA in Stourbridge, West Midlands, said vets had advised it was best to euthanise him, because of his condition, when he was discovered on Wednesday.

But they had fought to save him and on Thursday morning reported he was "a little perkier" after having eaten and been on fluids all night.

The branch said it had been the second incident in recent weeks involving cats found in bins and added: "We’re not sure how many more stories of cruelty we can take. It is utterly relentless."

The Stourbridge and District branch said in a Facebook post on Wednesday it had "24-48 hours to try and pull this boy back from the brink" after being discovered in a fabric storage box.

But while he had survived the night, it said his care would involve "extensive vets bills" and asked for donations.

It said he was "riddled with fleas, anaemic, emaciated and dehydrated".

The other cat found in a bin, who volunteers named Dewi, was dead when he was discovered.

The branch said he had been "thrown away into the recycling bin as though his life had never mattered".

It added: "Well he mattered to us and we fought tooth and nail to recover his body and will be getting him cremated to give the end of his life some dignity, rather than being left to decompose at the bottom of a household bin."
