A woman in her eighties died after a collision that involved a lorry and a car, police said.

Essex Police was called to the A414 at Writtle, near Chelmsford, shortly after 10:00 BST earlier.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and officers closed the road in both directions as inquiries started.

Her family have been informed and were being supported, Insp Timothy Swain, from the roads policing unit, said.

"Our thoughts remain with them this afternoon," he added.

“I appreciate the disruption this causes to road users, but it is vital we ensure our investigation is carried out properly and the scene made safe.”
