Islanders can now apply for a new role on every board of governors in Guernsey schools.

Anyone applying for the community governor role will need to have parish knowledge and engage with the school to shape its future.

The Committee for Education, Sport and Culture (ESC) hopes the role will allow the community, parents and staff to work more closely with school leaders and ESC politicians.

Community governors sit on the Interim Governance Board. Each board meets about three times a year to provide regular leadership oversight, support and challenge school leaders.

The executive team lead for the sixth form centre, Kieran James, said: "We will get a broader more diverse membership to these interim governing boards which will bring with it greater community involvement and greater buy in from the community which will be fantastic."

President of the ESC, Deputy Andrea Dudley-Owen, said: "As part of our commitment in our Education Strategy to review and develop appropriate governance systems for settings across the States sector, this work has been a key priority this term for our committee."

Applications for the community governor role are open until 16 September.

At the moment, the ongoing work to bring together La Mare de Carteret High School and Les Varendes High School means those Interim Governance Boards will not be advertising for additional members.
