A man has been arrested on suspicion of making threats to kill and malicious communications following an incident at the University of Sussex.

Sussex Police were called to the Falmer campus at about 18:30 GMT on Tuesday following a report of a man in possession of firearms.

Armed officers attended and a 19-year-old man was arrested.

He remains in police custody at this time.

A university spokesperson said: “This is now a matter for the police and it would it be inappropriate to comment any further at this stage.”

An extensive search of an address was also carried out and no firearms were found, police said.

As a precaution, a number of student flats were also evacuated.

Det Sgt Joshua Bellamy said: “The man was not found in possession of any firearms and enquiries are now ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the incident."
