The council said the plans were withdrawn as it felt other measures taken were enough to meet local needs

Plans for new speed bumps have been scrapped after a "cost review" into the scheme.

Coventry city council will no longer install the road humps in Earlsdon, due to "limited funding", said a letter to residents.

Two raised tables - a speed bump with a flat top - were approved for Spencer Road at its junction with Dalton Road and Beechwood Avenue's junction with Warwick Avenue.

A spokesperson for the council said locally raised concerns about the removal of the existing pedestrian island also played a part in its decision.

The “liveable neighbourhood” scheme is funded by a grant from West Midlands Combine Authority (WMCA) and a transport charity of £770,000, according to meeting papers from January.

The project included new crossings and “point” closures, as well as "raised tables" at three junctions:

  • Broadway/Belvedere Road

  • Spencer Road/Dalton Road

  • Beechwood Avenue/Warwick Avenue

But now only the first of these will go ahead.

The speed humps were a part of the council's plan to manage traffic in the area and included a blanket 20mph zone.

The letter to residents said phase one of the wider scheme would start this week, May 28.

The three projects that are part of the first phase of measures are:

  • A toucan crossing on Albany Road and extension of the existing cycleway.

  • Traffic-calming features on Beechwood Avenue at the tennis club, improvements to the guard railing at the bend between the tennis club and golf club, and a new pedestrian island at the golf club

  • A raised table at the junction of Broadway and Belvedere Road to slow traffic and improve the pedestrian crossing route into the park.

The revised scheme for the Earlsdon liveable neighbourhood

A spokesperson for the council said: “The decision has been taken not to go ahead with previous proposed work for a raised table and road layout changes at the junction of Spencer Road and Dalton Road following a cost review, and also some doubt locally about the removal of the existing pedestrian island.

“Likewise, the proposed raised table at the junction of Beechwood Avenue and Stoneleigh Avenue has also been withdrawn due to a cost review as it was felt that the changes to the parking and other measures nearby were enough to meet local needs.

“It is important to note that the Liveable Neighbourhood has been through two phases of consultation with local people. We have worked hard to balance this feedback with cost reviews to develop the final designs.”
