A couple have described a hotel stay, which led to them opting to sleep in their car, as "nothing short of a nightmare".

Rachel and Steve Rogers said the Eurobar Hotel in Oxford, also known as the OXO Hotel, was "absolutely disgusting and unacceptable".

They said that they found dirty linen, mould in the shower, and a dead mouse under a cabinet.

A hotel representative said it was dealing with the issues raised.

Mrs Rogers said: "The hotel was filthy. Dust covered every surface, and the bed linen was visibly dirty."

She said she was "bitten by fleas within minutes of entering the room".

She added: "The mould, dirt, dust, broken glass and dead mouse only confirms the extent of the health hazards... the stench was terrible."

Having checked in at about 18:00 BST on 28 May the couple said that they eventually decided to leave shortly after midnight "unable to bear the conditions any longer".

"We ended up sleeping in our car at a nearby park and ride, which was a far cry from the comfortable stay we had anticipated," she said.

Ms Rogers concluded the hotel "failed on every level".

A hotel spokesman told the BBC: "We are very concerned because this is something that has never happened.

"The hotel has been here for more than 60 years and we never had any problems like this."

He said the hotel's cleaning was outsourced to another company and the matter was being looked into.

"We are concerned, we are talking to them regarding this to make sure our guests are safe and secure and that they have clean sheets and everything they would expect," he said.

He added that the hotel was regularly monitored by pest control because the city centre was "suffering" from the problem.

Oxford City Council has been approached for comment.
