A comedian has paid homage to Caroline Aherne's inspiration for her to make a "life-changing" move from Manchester to Edinburgh.

Nina Gilligan went to see the Mrs Merton star, who died nine year ago aged 52, at the famous Fringe festival in the 1980s and then moved to the Scottish city.

She said: "I blame Caroline Aherne, rest her beautiful soul. I got to meet her and it prompted me to move to Edinburgh.

"That is how exciting the Edinburgh Fringe is - it changed my life."
