A man has died in a crash which closed both sides of the main road link between Scotland and England.

Emergency services were called out to reports of a single-vehicle accident which shut the A74(M) and M6 motorways at about 06:40.

Cumbria Police said the accident involved an HGV and the driver - a man in his 60s - was pronounced dead at the scene, close to junction 45 northbound for Gretna.

The road was shut between the border and Carlisle and diversions have been put in place and drivers have been asked to avoid the area if possible.

A number of other vehicles were also affected by damage and debris from the collision.

Police said the road was likely to remain closed "for some time".
