Two men have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a serious assault left another man with potentially life-changing injuries.

The injured man, in his 40s, was found with "stab-like wounds" in Claverham High Street on Thursday following reports of a man being seen with a knife at about 16:40 BST.

The victim was taken to hospital with injuries that police said were thought to be life-changing, but not life-threatening.

The two arrested men, aged 37 and 25, remain in police custody while inquiries continue. The 25-year-old was also arrested on suspicion of assault, affray and possessing an offensive weapon.

The road was closed for several hours for forensic examination, but was reopened by 22:30 BST on Thursday.

Insp Matthew Hawkins, of Avon and Somerset Police, described the incident as "out of the ordinary" for the village, adding that while police did not believe there was "any wider risk to the public", people would see an increased police presence in the area as inquiries continued.

Anyone in the area at the time who may have seen or heard anything suspicious, or who may have captured footage on CCTV or a dashcam, has been asked to contact police.
