Hull to mark Srebrenica Memorial Day

A memorial service will be held in Hull later to mark Srebrenica Memorial Day.
Members of the city's Bosnia and Herzegovina community will gather at 10:00 BST at the Guildhall to remember the thousands of people killed between 1992 and 1995.
On 11 July 1995, Bosnian Serb units captured the town of Srebrenica in Bosnia-Herzegovina. In less than two weeks, their forces murdered more than 8,000 Bosniaks (Bosnian Muslims).
During the conflict, millions of people were displaced and about 10,000 came to the UK.
'City of sanctuary'
Following speeches at the Guildhall, prayers will be said in the Peace Garden in Hanover Square.
Hull City Council leader Mike Ross said: “It is now nearly 30 years since the horrors of Srebrenica, but the hurt remains strong for those people who lost friends and family members.
“We will gather to remember them, and the tens of thousands of other people who died during the wider conflict.
“We are proud that Hull is a city of sanctuary, with a long history of providing a warm welcome for those who’ve been displaced from their own country."
Mr Ross added such events help create "a strong and more cohesive society".
