Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service has said it suspects arson after a large barn blaze near Newquay on Wednesday night.

The fire service said crews were called to the agricultural building blaze shortly after 19:30 BST.

It said nine fire engines and 56 firefighters had been at the scene.

Crews from Perranporth, Newquay, St Columb, St Dennis, Launceston and St Austell were among those to tackle the flames, it added.

In an update issued at 21:48 BST, the fire service confirmed the blaze had been extinguished.

A statement read: "Fire now extinguished. Incident scaling back and crews continuing to damp down.

"A crew will remain on scene into the early hours to monitor for and extinguish any hotspots. Arson is suspected."
