A woman who died in a fire on a boat in County Leitrim was an off-duty member of the Irish police force An Garda Síochána.

Deirdre Finn, known as Dee, died in the blaze in Carrick-on-Shannon in the early hours of Monday.

Gardaí (police officers) and other emergency services attended the scene of the fire, which is understood to have been an accident.

Ms Finn worked at Dun Laoghaire Garda Station in County Dublin.

The boat has since been taken to a secure location, where a forensic examination will take place.

Ms Finn's body was taken to Sligo University Hospital mortuary where a post-mortem examination will be carried out on Tuesday.

A Garda spokeswoman said a family liaison officer had been provided to Ms Finn's family and support would be offered to her colleagues where required.
