A man has died after being hit by a car on a town's busy road, police have confirmed.

Northumbria Police said the man in his 70s was struck by a black Range Rover on the A696 in Ponteland on Saturday.

The driver of the car was assisting police, officers said.

The crash happened near the junction with North Road, at about 11.35 BST.

A spokesman for the force said the car struck the man outside St Mary's Church.

They added the pedestrian's next of kin had been informed and were being supported by officers.
