An investigation has been launched into the source of oil pollution which has affected ducks and other birdlife in a Merseyside brook.

The spill has covered nearly a mile (1.3km) of Dovers Brook, in Maghull, Sefton, the Environment Agency said.

The substance was reported on Thursday, the agency confirmed.

It said staff had been working with the RSPCA but were now appealing for the public's help as they try to discover what happened.

Information appeal

Environment planning manager Andy Brown said teams had been "working hard to contain" the spill.

He called anyone with information to come forward so they can ensure "this type of pollution doesn't happen again".

“As with any pollution, we will take relevant enforcement action as required," he added.

Anyone who can help has been urged to contact the Environment Agency or the Crimestoppers charity.
