Ewan McGregor has received an award for outstanding contribution to film and television at the Scottish Baftas - and paid tribute to his uncle Denis Lawson for inspiring his acting career.

The Star Wars and Trainspotting star was among a host of celebrities who turned out for the ceremony in Glasgow including David Tennant and James McAvoy.

Tennant, who was nominated for his role in Rivals, said Scotland "punches above its weight culturally" worldwide.

Among those also honoured were James McArdle for his role in Four Mothers and Saoirse Ronan for her part in The Outrun.

After making his breakthrough in films such Shallow Grave, Brassed Off and Trainspotting, Ewan McGregor has gone on to star in a host of Hollywood blockbusters including Star Wars and Moulin Rouge.

Denis Lawson presented the award to his nephew, describing him as an "extraordinarily versatile actor".

McGregor in turn described his uncle - who also appeared in Star Wars - as "my biggest inspiration" and credited him for teaching him what acting really was.

"I can't imagine anybody I would rather get this amazing award from than my uncle Denis," he said.

He also paid tribute to his wife, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and said he would love to work with her more, jokingly calling for more films they could be in together.

"Mary and I are now here in Scotland, so to save us the pain of having to be apart, maybe you could come up with lots of Scottish films that we can be in together," he said.

Who were the other winners?

James McArdle picked up the actor film/television award for his role in Four Mothers, a comedy drama about a novelist whose friends leave him in charge of their elderly mothers, each with their own quirks, as well as his own.

He praised the "incredible producers, and this phenomenal cast of those four women", joking that "to be trapped in a bus with these four octogenarians was a real, real joy."

Saoirse Ronan's award for actress - film/television was collected on her behalf by her friend and fellow nominee Izuka Hoyle who read out a message sent by Ronan.

In it, Ronan thanked the people of Orkney, where the film is partly set, saying: "This would not have been possible without you, your willingness to let us into your lives, your homes, your story."

The film, which focuses on a recovering alcoholic who returns to her childhood home, also picked up an honour for its director Nora Fingscheidt.

David Tennant appeared on the red carpet with Gary Lamont, who was nominated in the audience award for favourite Scot on screen for his performance in the TV series Rivals, based on the late Jilly Cooper's raunchy novel.

Tennant said his wife urged him to take on the role, telling him "it's going to be a massive hit".

Commenting on the Bafta Scotland awards, Tennant said: "Scotland punches above its weight culturally throughout Britain and throughout the world, and I think it's good to boast about that now and again and go, you know what, this is an industry that we are doing well in, let's be proud of it."

The award for single documentary went to BBC Scotland's Kids on the Psychiatric Ward.

The BBC Disclosure investigation, presented by Mark Daly, focused on allegations of serious abuse at an adolescent psychiatric unit in Glasgow.

The Bafta Scotland Audience Award, voted for by the public, went to Sheli McCoy, better known as Sabre, for Gladiators.

Lockerbie: A Search for Truth received the award for Television Scripted while On Falling took two awards on the night, for feature and debut feature for filmmaker Laura Carreira.

The Hunt for Peter Tobin also won two awards - for factual series and director factual.
