A major road in North Yorkshire is closed after a serious collision between a van and a truck, National Highways has said.

The A64 near York was closed in both directions at about 03:15 BST, according to the agency.

Police said the road remained closed between the A19 Fulford Interchange and the A1036 junction eastbound at Tadcaster Road and advised drivers to avoid the area and use alternative routes.

National Highways said police, fire and ambulance services were at the scene with highways officers working to release traffic caught within the closure.
