A section of the Isle of Man TT course connecting the Manx capital with the north has re-opened after being closed to allow for a clean-up operation.

The emergency closure on the A18 Mountain Road, which stretched from the Creg Ny Baa to the Bungalow, was in place from 09:30 until 12:00 BST.

The Department of Infrastructure (DOI) said a private contractor had "accidently spilt bitumous material onto the carriageway".

The department said actions were taken to plane the substance off the carriageway between Brandywell and the Bungalow before the road was re-inspected.

Initial efforts by the contractor to clear it off the surface had "met with only limited success" on Tuesday, it added.

The closure would also enable the team to inspect the condition of the road following the spillage.
