A senior police officer who previously led his force's professional standards department has been charged with drink driving.

Det Supt Paul Kessell of Dorset Police has been suspended from duty following the alleged incident on Sunday 4 August.

Dorset Police said the 45-year-old was not on duty at the time.

He is due before Southampton magistrates on 13 September charged with driving while over the prescribed legal alcohol limit.
