The Kooks lead singer Luke Pritchard has said he is proud to be performing a homecoming gig in Brighton, nearly 20 years after the band's debut album.

Pritchard, who studied at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music (BIMM), will return to the city on Sunday, as part of the band's UK tour.

He told the BBC it was a "very creative and free place" that had "really impacted our music".

The Kooks released their debut album, Inside In/Inside Out, in 2006, selling more than 1.5m copies in the UK.

Pritchard said: "Brighton was the melting pot of musical styles.

"You were allowed to be a bit more random with your musical choices - there wasn't the pressure of being a super-cool London indie band.

"Every single street had a pub where we could play and they'd always let us."

The Kooks formed in 2004 while they were students at BIMM, now known as the BIMM Music Institute.

They received two Brit Award nominations in 2007.

In May, the group released a seventh studio album, Never/Know, and picked up a Brit Billion Award after their music surpassed a billion streams in the UK.

On the upcoming show at the Brighton Centre, Pritchard said: "We'll be proud to be there. We want to deliver to the place that created us."

He added: "When I went to Brighton, it was the first time I could be myself. You can really be whoever you want to be.

"It really embraced live music and I believe it still does now."
