Metro services to and from Newcastle Airport were suspended for more than an hour after a car collided with a train at a level crossing.

The crash happened shortly before 10:00 BST at Callerton Parkway.

Emergency services attended but no-one was seriously injured. Services between the Airport and Kingston Park resumed about 90 minutes later.

Kevin Storey, operations director at Tyne and Wear Metro's operator Nexus, said there was no damage to tracks or signals and that "inspections have shown that the crossing was functioning correctly".

He said people should "always take care and attention at Metro level crossings to ensure they are used safely".
