A man in his 50s is in a critical condition in hospital after he was attacked during the evening rush hour.
The man was attacked in Springfield Road, Kings Heath, at about 17:00 BST, and the area remains cordoned off.
Det Sgt Shereen Ballentine, from West Midlands Police, said it was an "appalling assault at what was a very busy time, with people walking and driving through the area".
Officers are carrying out CCTV and house-to-house inquiries and have appealed for anyone with dashcam or mobile phone footage to contact them as soon as possible.
