A couple have tied the knot after the groom was injured during his stag do when his best man tackled him on the pitch at a rugby union match.

Martyn and Michelle Disney returned from their Lake District honeymoon on Sunday following their wedding at Donington Park in Leicestershire on 12 October.

Their special day came a week after the second half of a match between Newcastle Falcons and Leicester Tigers was delayed when medics from both clubs were called to Mr Disney's aid.

The 44-year-old, from Leicester, was stretchered off after a heavy tackle from best man Sam Myring following the Falcons Flyer half-time race.

Mr Disney said his wedding day had been "just phenomenal"

Mr Disney, who was dressed as Princess Jasmine from Aladdin at the time, said he woke up in hospital on a spinal board feeling panicky.

However, he made a full recovery in time for the wedding, where the best man's speech proved one of the highlights.

"[The wedding] was amazing," Mr Disney said. "The best man speech, well, you can imagine how that went."

The groom said his best man had written his speech before the stag do but it was rewritten to reflect the drama.

He added: "You ain't gonna get a better best man's speech. It had the whole room in bits."

Mr Disney said the staff at Newcastle Falcons had been "absolutely fantastic" throughout his accident and had contacted his best man afterwards to make sure the groom was OK.

The club also provided a video from Steve Diamond, director of rugby, wishing the couple well, which was played at the wedding.
