A man who left his elderly victim in a coma after attacking him and setting his house on fire has been jailed for 23 years.

Rostislav Godla assaulted the man, in his 70s, at his home in Gordon Road in Swanwick, Derbyshire, on 8 June 2024.

He tied his victim to a chair and demanded to know the pin numbers for his bank cards while threatening to stab him with a knife, Derbyshire Police said.

When they were handed over, the 45-year-old set the house alight with his victim still bound to the chair by his arms, legs and neck.

The force said he then used the cards to spend £1,600 in JD Sports in Derby.

Godla, of Butterley Park in Ripley, admitted wounding his victim with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, arson with intent to endanger life, robbery, false imprisonment and two counts of fraud.

He was jailed at Derby Crown Court on Friday and handed a five-year extended licence.
