DadSpace offers dads in Kent a safe space to share their experiences of fatherhood

An initiative that gives dads a safe space to share their experiences of fatherhood is to expand further across Kent after receiving a new grant.

DadSpace currently offers meet-ups and activities including gym sessions, outdoor pursuits and charity football matches for fathers in Maidstone, Sevenoaks and Ashford.

Following funding from Kent County Council (KCC), DadSpace founder Denver King plans to expand the network to Thanet, Dartford, Gravesham, Faversham and Folkestone and Hythe.

“It’s a myth that men don’t want to talk about their experiences of being a father,” he said.

“Give us a safe space and we will open up, which can have positive impacts on the whole family.

“Now we have a fantastic chance to grow and provide a consistent service to many more dads across more places in Kent and we’ll be recruiting and training more volunteers to help us do this.”

KCC director of public health Dr Anjan Ghosh said DadSpace was “at the forefront” of recognising and responding to fathers' needs.

“We know dads can find it difficult to reach out for support when they are struggling with the pressures of parenting.

“This is particularly so ahead of a birth, and in those demanding 24 months that follow, when parent-baby bonding is at such a formative stage and the risk of perinatal mental health issues impacting relationships is high.”

Dan Watkins, KCC cabinet member for public health, added: “As a father myself, I know how life-changing becoming a parent is and how important it is to be supported.”
