Job losses as country hotel closes its doors
- Published
A Shropshire country hotel is to close and staff will lose their jobs.
The Buckatree Hall Hotel on Ercall Lane, at the foot of the Wrekin, is currently up for sale with an asking price of £3.1m.
Staff were told the hotel will close on 6 September and a number of events and parties have been affected.
The owner of the hotel, Sarac Hotels, has been approached for a comment.
The Buckatree's sister hotel, the Haughton Hall Hotel and Leisure Club in Shifnal, said that all bookings, where possible, were being transferred there.
'Two out of five'
The 62-bedroom hotel was given a food rating of two out of five in April 2023 by Telford and Wrekin Council, meaning improvement was necessary.
According to the hotel website, "the hall derived its name from stag hunting days when a buck was found in the fork of a tree. The hall was rebuilt in the 1920s by Sir John Bayley, the founder of Wrekin College".
A family lived there from the 1930s to the 1960s, after which the hall reopened as a hotel and country club.
The website said the opening was a "grand affair" attended by England and Wolves footballer Billy Wright and his wife Joy Beverley, of the Beverley Sisters.
