Advice not to set out into the countryside unprepared has been issued after a woman had to be rescued from a bog near Bradgate Park.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service was called to assist a woman and her dog who had become trapped in thick mud

A woman who had sunk up to her knees in Swithland Woods alongside her doberman rang for help at about 08:20 GMT on Tuesday.

Crews from Leicester's Western and Southern stations, working with Bradgate Park rangers, freed the pair and brought them to safety using an inflatable pathway.

The incident has prompted the brigade to issue a warning to ensure people leave home prepared for the worst.

People should ensure their phones are charged so they can call for help and should install the what3words app to get an exact location to share with emergency services, a spokesperson said.

Anyone venturing into the countryside should wear warm and waterproof clothing and if anyone comes across a person or animal in distress they should raise the alarm immediately, the service added.

A spokesperson said: "Stay safe while enjoying nature."
