A woman has died after being hit by a car as she was leaving her vehicle.

The 51-year-old was hit by a red Volkswagen Golf on the A184 in South Tyneside, between the junction for Whitemare Pool and the Testo’s roundabout.

Police said the crash happened at about 01:10 GMT on Saturday and the driver of the car stayed at the scene.

The victim was pronounced dead a short time after emergency services arrived. Her next of kin have been notified.

Sgt Dave Roberts at Northumbria Police said: “This is an incredibly tragic incident where a woman has lost her life.

Northumbria Police has appealed for witnesses to come forward in order to "establish the full circumstances".

The road was closed in both directions for about seven hours.
