Accident and emergency departments in Aberdeen and Elgin have reported their busiest day ever for people suffering weather-related falls.

On Monday 4 December, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and Dr Gray's Hospital in Elgin saw a total of 145 patients who had fallen on ice during wintry conditions.

NHS Grampian said it was the highest number of such injuries its staff had ever seen on a single day.

The majority of patients were aged between 61 and 75, and the equivalent of an entire extra ward was needed to deal with admissions.
