Football club to pay respects to former player

People have been leaving tributes on social media following the death of football player

A football club will pay its respects on matchday to a former player who died unexpectedly last month.

Halesworth Town Football Club announced the death of Toby Chenery, who died last month, aged 23.

His team said on social media: "He will leave a huge hole in not only our lives but those of his football family, many fiends, colleagues and all who knew him."

In a separate post on Facebook, the club said it would "be paying respects at the game" with a two-minute silence during the home fixture against Old Newton United in the Suffolk & Ipswich League, which kicks off at 14:30 GMT on Saturday.

Mr Chenery joined Halesworth Town when he was 17 years old, in 2018.

The club added that he "went to bed a fit, happy and healthy young man and sadly passed away in his sleep".

Other local football clubs have paid tributes, including Southwold Town, which posted: "We send our sincerest condolences to Toby's family, friends and everyone connected to Halesworth Town FC."

Halesworth Town added: "Your support would be hugely appreciated.

"We would like to say a massive thank you to the local and footballing community for the incredible support we have received following the sad news of Toby."
