Touring giant earth to visit refurbished hall

Luke Jerram's Gaia will be coming to Bridgwater

Bridgwater Town Hall will mark its refurbishment next year by hosting the Gaia exhibition - the suspended installation featuring satellite images of Earth on it.

It is the brainchild of artist Luke Jerram, who also created the Fallen Moon, which was displayed in the town's docks last month but deflated in bad weather.

Gaia has travelled around the world, being on display at the Natural History Museum, Bristol Cathedral and the Brisbane Festival.

The town council said it will be an "exciting cultural event" for Bridgwater.

The structure is a suspended seven-metre diametre sphere, created using NASA imagery.

It aims to show people what it is like to see earth from space, and offer a deeper understanding of the planet's fragility - known as the overview effect.

Bridgwater Town Councillor Irena Hubble said: "I am delighted to hear we are continuing to collaborate with Luke Jerram.

"We look forward to welcoming both residents and visitors to experience this extraordinary artwork.”

Luke Jerram added: "I am delighted that my partnership with Bridgwater will be continuing forward into 2025.

"I hope that Gaia in the newly-refurbished Town Hall will be an exciting cultural event for the town and that visitors will get to see the Earth as if from space, an incredibly beautiful and precious place."
