A rapist who attacked a woman in a Wetherspoon pub toilet has had his jail sentence more than doubled after a court deemed his original sentence was unduly lenient.

Szczepan Zenon Malczewski, 38, was jailed for six years following a Court of Appeal hearing earlier, having originally been jailed for two years and nine months.

The court heard how Malczewski had locked his victim, who was in her early 20s, in a toilet cubicle at the Lord Roseberry pub in Scarborough and raped her on 7 May.

His sentence was reviewed under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme before being referred to the Court of Appeal.

Malczewski, of Sandstone Road, in Eastfield, was initially jailed in August after pleading guilty to one count of rape and two counts of assault by penetration.

Lord Justice David Bean, who chaired the hearing, said the victim "was very seriously intoxicated" and "was in no position to defend herself".

The panel said the offence fell into a higher sentencing category as a result and quashed the original jail term.

Malczewski, who appeared at the hearing via video link from HMP Hull, was told his concurrent sentences for assault by penetration would remain unchanged.

Prosecution barrister Fiona Robertson said the victim was "particularly vulnerable" and had suffered "severe psychological harm".

In a victim impact statement, the woman said the incident had "really damaged my confidence".

"I'm now a different person. I used to be good at socialising and going out, but now I don't - I just stay in," she said.

"I now hate the image of myself and how I look. To be put in that position and feel so helpless had completely broken me and you [Malczewski] deserve everything you get."
