An eight-year-old boy who died after being shot in the head and face at a farm has been named as Jay Cartmell.

The boy, from Frizington, in west Cumbria, was injured on land near the A66, north of Warcop, nearly 60 miles away, at about 14:50 BST on Saturday and later died in hospital.

A man in his 60s who was being held on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter was released on bail.

A Cumbria police spokesman said the firearm "was secured at the scene".

Officers said they were continuing to investigate the circumstances and encouraged anyone who may have witnessed the incident or the moments leading up to it to come forward.
