Police are investigating after a car was deliberately set on fire outside the prison in Peterhead.

The incident - involving a Citroen C3 Cactus - happened in the car park of HMP Grampian in South Road at about 01:15 on Tuesday.

There were no reports of injuries and the fire was put out by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

Police Scotland said the fire was being treated as wilful and inquiries were ongoing.

It added that it was working with the Scottish Prison Service to establish who was responsible for the fire.

Det Sgt Richard Cooper said: "The consequences of this dangerous and reckless act could have been much more serious.

"I am appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident or who has any information which could assist to contact us.

"I would also appeal to anyone driving in the area with dash-cam or anyone nearby with personal footage to please check their recordings and get in touch if it holds anything relevant."
