A mother has admitted assaulting her primary school-aged daughter on two occasions, during what a judge called "a loss of self-control".
The woman, in her 30s, from Carlisle, was ordered to undertake rehabilitation work when she appeared at the city's crown court on Monday.
The court heard the woman - who cannot be named to protect her daughter's identity - was in the back garden on the first occasion, when she threw the youngster to the floor during an argument.
A second assault took place at the same address, when the woman slapped her daughter in the face after treading on a toy that had been left on the floor.
The sentencing judge, Recorder Julian Shaw, observed to the woman that the assaults had occurred amid a "loss of self-control".
"As parents, it is challenging. It is tough," he said.
"But we are adults and they are children, and we understand we must follow and respect self-restraint, boundaries, and retain our ability to prioritise their needs over our own."
Both assaults happened in 2021, the court was told.
The woman's barrister, mitigating, said the offences were "considerably old now", adding there had been no issues between the pair since the incidents took place.
Recorder Shaw imposed a 12-month community order, directing the woman to complete rehabilitation work with the probation service during that period of time.
