Over 2,000 public electric vehicle (EV) charge points have been added to the South East's network in the last year, according to new government figures.

The 29% growth since April 2024 means there are now over 9,200 public chargers in the region.

This spike is part of a £2.3bn government investment to help drivers switch to electric vehicles, while a separate £200m investment is helping to roll out rapid chargepoints nationwide.

Local authorities in Kent, Surrey and Sussex have all made commitments to installing EV chargers in their respective counties.

Kent County Council has been awarded a grant of more than £12m from the Department for Transport to help increase these numbers, while Surrey County Council has pledged to install 10,000 devices at 1,500 locations by 2030.

In December, Brighton & Hove City Council secured a £2.8m government grant to fund the installation of 500 EV charging points every year for the next three years.

Separately, West Sussex County Council has received a £5.5m grant from the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles to install up to 1,000 EV charging points.
