Huge scrapyard blaze tackled by firefighters

Three diggers and several others vehicles were on fire

About 150 firefighters tackled a large fire at an industrial estate in south-east London.

The blaze broke out at a warehouse in a scrapyard on Maypole Crescent in Erith shortly before 23:00 BST on Friday.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) said three diggers and several vehicles were also alight, but there were no reports of any injuries.

The blaze, the cause of which is under investigation, had been brought under control by 06:52.

LFB Assistant Commissioner Pat Goulbourne said: "Our crews have been working hard throughout the night at a large fire on an industrial estate in Erith. While the fire is now under control, we continue to tackle some areas of waste material that are still alight."

He said firefighters will maintain a presence at the site for the rest of the day.

"The estate and the nearby roads are closed and we advise residents or those who work at the site to avoid the area," Mr Goulbourne added.

Twenty-five fire engines were sent to the scene, along with two 32-metre turntable ladders, which were used to provide an aerial view and deliver water from above, an LFB spokesperson said.

One of the brigade's fire boats was also deployed to assist firefighting from the River Thames. The vessel can pump 2,500 litres of water per minute using its remote-operated monitors.

Crews from Bexley, Erith, Plumstead, East Greenwich, Sidcup and other nearby stations responded after the first emergency call was received at 22:47.
