Two men arrested after man injured in machete attack

Two men have been arrested after another man was attacked by what is believed to have been a machete in Newcastle, County Down.

The incident happened at approximately 12:30 BST on Saturday in the Tipperary Lane area.

The victim sustained serious injuries to his face, hands and legs in the assault.

The attackers made off from the scene and two men were later detained by officers in the Bunkers Hill area of Castlewellan.

The pair, aged 30 and 60, were arrested on suspicion of a number of offences including attempted murder. They remain in police custody.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
