A 45-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after another man, aged in his 60s, died following reports he was punched in Oxford city centre.

Thames Valley Police said officers were called to St Aldate's at about 16:25 BST on Saturday.

The force said the victim had sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital, where he died on Sunday.

The arrested man, of no fixed address, was also arrested on suspicion of assault of a person thereby occasioning them actual bodily harm and grievous bodily harm with intent. He remains in police custody.

Det Chf Insp Laura Corscadden said police were "still in the early stages" of their investigation and had yet to identify the victim's next of kin.

"I understand that incidents such as this are tragic events and I recognise the concern this will cause in the local community, however, we do not believe there is a threat to the wider public at this time," she said.

Anyone with information about the incident was urged to contact the force.
