Club smashes fundraising target after floods

Sunday’s fixture was moved from AFC Telford to Wolverhampton

A football club, which saw its stadium end up several feet underwater in flash floods, has smashed a fundraising target after appealing for help to clear up the damage.

AFC Telford said it was waiting for the ground to dry out over the weekend before it could assess the damage.

Sunday’s fixture - between Wolves Women and Fylde Women - was moved from Telford’s SEAH Stadium to the Compton Park Training Ground in Wolverhampton.

Volunteers turned out to help AFC Telford pump out its ground on Friday and by Sunday, the club’s fundraising appeal had exceeded its £5,000 target.

A statement on AFC Telford’s website said after being overwhelmed with water, they had been overwhelmed by kindness.

The club said: “Working out what has been damaged by water ingress and will need replacing or repairing will be another task for early next week, but again, we have received offers of assistance that have left us very humble.”

All donations from the appeal are going to costs directly associated with the flooding, and any funds left over will go to the AFC Telford United Foundation to support its work in the community, it said.
