A 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault after a six-year-old boy and a man in his 30s were attacked in Hertford town centre.

Hertfordshire Police said the incident happened at about 19:00 BST on Saturday in Parliament Square.

The force said a Volkswagen van and a Nissan Juke crashed "before an altercation occurred".

The man and the boy in the Juke were assaulted, and when police attended the scene they were subjected to racially abusive language.

The 24-year-old, from Hoddesdon, was arrested on suspicion of assault by beating, using racially/religiously aggravated language with the intent to cause harassment/alarm/distress, criminal damage and failing to provide a drink/drug specimen.

He has been released on bail while inquiries continue.

Det Sgt Adam Haines said officers had continued "to provide the victims with ongoing support", and they were keen to talk to anyone "who tried to intervene as the situation escalated as they may have crucial information to assist our investigation".

He added: "If you saw what happened, no matter how small or insignificant you think the details you have may be, please email me, external."
