Two people have been injured after a man armed with an axe attacked them in a village in North Yorkshire.

Police were called to an address in Hambleton, near Selby, at about 18:15 BST on Tuesday following reports a 32-year-old man was making threats and had assaulted a man in his 20s and a woman in her 50s.

North Yorkshire Police said paramedics attended Gateforth Lane and the injured people were taken to hospital for treatment.

The suspect left the scene on foot, the force said, with armed officers making an arrest on Fox Lane, Thorpe Willoughby, at about 20:55 BST.

"He remains in police custody for questioning," a police spokesperson said.

"Witnesses or anyone with information about the incident are asked to call North Yorkshire Police."
