A woman who was knocked down and killed had just become a grandmother, her family has said.

Gillian Simpson, 75, died in hospital after the collision on Colne Road in Brierfield, Lancashire on 22 September.

Her family said they were "devastated" at the loss of "a loving mother and grandmother to her first granddaughter", Phoebe, and "a friend to many".

A 24-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving in connection with the incident, and has been bailed while enquiries continued, Lancashire Police said.

In a statement issued by Lancashire Police, Ms Simpson's family said: "Gillian was a lovely lady who put her family and friends - most of all her son and granddaughter first.

"She loved spending time with her first grandchild and was happiest she had been over the last four weeks."

"My mum died with family at her bedside," said her son, Chris.

"We love you and you will forever be in our hearts. A day won't go by that we won't miss you loads every day."

Police received a report of the crash, involving a white Mercedes CLA, at 18:02 BST on Monday 22 September.

It happened on Colne Road at the junction with Every Street.

A police spokesperson said: "Our thoughts remain with Gillian's loved ones at this very sad time and they are being supported by specially trained family liaison officers."

They appealed for anyone with information or footage to contact them.
