Students at risk of disengaging from education have received motivational support from Luton Town FC as part of the English Football League's Week of Action.

Luton Town manager Jack Wilshere and club legend Mick Harford joined a PE lesson and answered questions from pupils at Chiltern Academy.

The initiative aims to inspire young people who may be struggling in mainstream education by helping them build confidence, resilience and essential life skills.

Wilshere said: "If there's anything we can do to give a little bit of belief to people, then of course we will."

The club Community Trust's Brighter Futures project works with pupils who have care experience or are on support plans.

Through one-to-one mentoring, the programme helps participants develop personal and social skills, and self-belief.

Students at the Luton-based secondary school said the experience on Tuesday was both motivational and memorable.

Zachary said: "It motivates us to be better and shows us a pathway to where we want to be. It meant a lot because those are the people I look up to."

Levito agreed: "Football is really fun for me. Whenever I play, I forget everything else - meeting the manager was very inspirational."

The school welcomes students in Year 9 and above who are on an education, health and care plan.

The day offered young people a chance to explore post-school opportunities, including further education and career opportunities.

Daniel Douglas, head of the Community Trust, said his team tries to use the power of sport to unlock potential.

"It's all about working with young people who are disengaged in school, providing mentoring opportunities and positive routes through education," he said.

Club captain Kal Naismith also took part in coaching sessions.

"This gives them a chance to blow off steam and hopefully be more focused when they go back into the classroom."
