The reopening of a historic museum has been hit by another setback after a major contractor went into administration.

Preston's Harris Museum closed three years ago to undergo a £16m revamp.

The Grade I-listed building, established in 1893, was originally due to reopen this year but it was delayed until spring next year after the discovery of unexpected asbestos, required boiler works and additional fire safety works.

Preston City Council said it was "extremely disappointed" Beck Interiors Ltd had gone into administration adding it was taking legal advice to understand the implications on the Harris Your Place project.

The authority's cabinet member for Arts and Culture, councillor Anna Hindle said: "We are extremely disappointed about the news that Beck Interiors Ltd have gone into administration."

She added: "We are working hard behind the scenes to secure a replacement specialist fit out contractor. We will provide an update on the situation once we have appointed a replacement contractor."

The council had said the refurbished museum would be a "cornerstone of cultural engagement" that would "delve into the themes of identity and belonging".
