Thieves have stolen part of a hedge that was installed two weeks ago at a park in Scunthorpe.

About 48 laurel plants were taken from the play area in Warley Road, said North Lincolnshire Council, which is investing £100,000 in the site.

Councillor John Davison described the theft as "soul-destroying and said: "I can’t imagine who would do something as low as this."

In October, vandals caused £11,000 worth of damage at the park after they set fire to play equipment.

“The whole community around Warley Road is coming together to make it a better place for everyone – criminal acts like this directly impact local families and residents," Mr Davison said.

“We are investing thousands of pounds in our green spaces to provide much needed facilities for everyone, of all ages, and this kind of act is soul-destroying."

The council said the hedge was planted at the request of the community which wanted "some green features in the park".

Around £100,000 has been invested in the park, including repairing and replacing equipment at the a multi-use games area and outdoor gym.
