New round of industrial site demolitions planned

Plans have been submitted to demolish more of an industrial estate as part of regeneration efforts.

Sunderland City Council has submitted two applications to its own planning department to destroy multiple buildings at the Sheepfolds Industrial Estate.

The demolition is part of wider plans for the riverside site, next to the Stadium of Light, which include a new leisure venue and hundreds of new homes.

It follows the approval of a number of applications to remove buildings on the estate.

As part of regeneration efforts, Sheepfolds will be connected to the former Vaux site via a new footbridge over the River Wear and will house the new Sheepfolds Stables hospitality venue, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

The application documents for the latest round of demolitions said the current buildings were "redundant".

Subject to approval, work on both demolition projects is expected to start in mid-September and finish at the end of October.
