People in Coventry are being offered free safety items, to protect them from thieves while they are out shopping this Christmas.

The items include 4,000 bells which ring if a purse is taken, 3,000 card defenders, 1,000 cables to secure purses and bags, and 450 personal alarms with torches.

They will be distributed on Friday, along with advice on how to stay safe while shopping.

It is the third year Coventry's Business Improvement District group has supported shoppers in this way.

The group, which represents local businesses, will be by the fountain in Lower Precinct from 10:00 to 13:00 GMT.

Its chief executive, Joanne Glover, said Christmas was the time of year when street thieves were "most prevalent".

She added: "We want everyone to enjoy the city centre safely this Christmas and small precautions can make a real difference in deterring crime."

Banks and building societies in the city will also help distribute the items..

Leanne Reeve, branch manager at Lloyds Bank, said: "We have customers asking throughout the year for the sleeves and bells."
