The A12 near Chelmsford will be closed for some time, while police investigate a serious collision

The A12 in Essex has been closed northbound following a serious collision involving two cars.

Highways East said the road would be closed "for some time" between junction 15 for Margaretting and junction 16 for Chelmsford.

Essex Police said the collision happened at about 23:30 on Wednesday and its officers had "closed the road and turned traffic as quickly as possible".

Drivers are advised to avoid the area and to allow extra time while travelling.

National Highways said: "Due to the nature of the incident, the road will be closed for some time to allow for police collision investigation works to take place."

It shared the following diversion route, external:

  • Exit the A12 at J15 and join the A414 Three Mile Hill road northbound

  • Continue on the A414 northbound until the A1016 roundabout

  • Join the A1016 northbound around Chelmsford and continue until the A130 roundabout

  • Join the A130 White Hart Lane and continue onward to then re-join the A12 northbound at J19 (Boreham Interchange)
